Utan Hringsins (Outside the Circle) (2011)

SATB chamber choir, two soloists (bar. & soprano), and percussion

A minimalist-inspired work written in Iceland with text by Steinn Steinarr, both in the original Icelandic and with translated solos in English. The percussion (bass drum and crotales) can be played by a separate percussionist or by the two solo singers. The piece was graciously sung by singers of Áskirkja choir, percussion by Iceland National Symphony player Frank Aarnink, and recorded by Greenhouse recording studios. A nod to David Lang’s gorgeous work ‘Little Match Girl Passion’ is in here as the work is quite spare and exposed, circling around and folding back on itself in small repeating patterns. Recorded as a bonus track for ‘Origin of the Sun and Moon‘ album and a stand-alone choral work for future performances.
