Music of North Side Spaces (2010)
site-specific chamber groups, walking tour, 60'
A series of live performances on a walking tour of Pittsburgh’s North Side. Compositions explored the history, landscape, architecture, and culture of the area, and included stops to the New Hazlett Theatre, Buhl Planetarium, Allegheny Commons, and Mexican War Streets, culminating with an installation-inspired performance at Mattress Factory Museum of Contemporary Art. All performances were site-specific; over 30 musicians were cast in ensembles ranging from a brass quintet at (and in!) the lake, to two musicians improvising in trees, to a quartet of singers accompanied by percussive typewriters, books, and torn papers. Made possible by a Charm Bracelet Microgrant.
