Le Bunker/Window Music (2023)

mixed media installation/sound installation-graphic score

Le Bunker is a site-specific installation made on the grounds of Chateau La Napoule, in Mandelieu-La-Napoule, France. The piece converts a former Nazi-created bunker on the grounds of the Chateau into a queer sex dungeon.

Hours of cleanup of twenty years of accumulated debris and trash led to the uncovering of several elements used in the installation. Added elements include light, soundscape, drawings, a ‘sling’ made of XLR cables, and a short live performance with lyrics in French and English.

Window Music is the ‘angel’ companion to the ‘devil’ bunker piece; each watercolor interprets the stained glass windows of the Chateau as pitches of a set music scale, with the size of the stained glass correlating to rhythm. Read left to right in small composite panels, the colors are then translated into music, played back electronically in the space. The piece can also be performed live as visual scores or as a standalone video work.

Many thanks to La Napoule Foundation for the residency opportunity.
