Restless (2012)

Commissioned by Trillium Ensemble, Restless is a 2011 work by composer and artist Nathan Hall. It sets a Greenlandic poem (translated into English) about that feeling of being cooped up, anxious, ready to burst out of the city and spend some time alone in the country. Musical sections evoke a timeless stasis, jazz-inflected counterpoint, a bombastic climax, and a long, slow snowfall. The piece can be performed with three players (fl, bs. cl, and singer doubling piano), or four. This recording is from Playground Ensemble who gave the Colorado premiere of the work in 2017, live at Boulder Public Library. For more information: nathan-hall.net.
