Cabaret de Profundis, Or How To Sing While Ugly Crying (2020)

cabaret/play, 94 minutes

Collaboration with Buntport Theater Company

A comedy about grief, dirty woodcuts, and one of the wonders of the ancient world.

Based loosely on the real life Artemisia II of Caria is a cabaret-style evening featuring Hannah Duggan. You’ll learn about Artemisia, including her commissioning the creation of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and her penchant for mourning her husband’s loss by drinking his ashes in her wine. And you’ll be entertained by her non-sequiturs and side stories (yes, including a song about dirty woodcuts carved by monks).

Original music and arrangement of public domain tunes by Nathan Hall; played by Hannah Duggan as Artemisia and Nathan Hall as Nathan.

Originally slated for premiere March 13-April 4, 2020, the production was postponed, released on livestream video October 2020, and then finally staged to live audiences October 2021. The album of music was released on March 13, 2020. A really silly preview is below.
